El Salvador first produced coffee commercially in the 1850s, and it quickly became an important part of its economy becoming the fourth-largest coffee producer in the world by 1880. The growth of the coffee industry also resulted in and supported the growth of the country's infrastructure, with investments in paved highways, railroads and ports, resulting in them becoming one of the most progressive Central American nation by the early 20th century.

Coffee from El Salvador had a reputation for quality and enjoyed good relationships with other nations importing their coffee. However, the civil war of the 1980s had a severe impact on this and resulted in a fall of coffee production and consumers started looking elsewhere for their coffee. Fast forward to the present, El Salvador has undertaken marketing efforts to regain its standing among other coffee-producing countries and re-establish old relationships with consuming nations.

El Salvador is relatively small compared to its neighbours, and while some argue that coffee from El Salvador could be classified as a single region, we can broadly divide the coffee growing regions into: Apaneca-Ilamatepec Mountain Range, Alotepec-Metapan Mountain Range, El Bálsamo-Quezaltepec Mountain Range, Chichontepec Volcano, Tepeca-Chinameca Mountain Range, and Cacahuatique Mountain Range.

Our coffee this month comes from the Apaneca-Ilamatepec region, more specifically the Las Brumas farm. Located in the slopes of the Santa Ana Volcano about 45 minutes from the city of Santa Ana, the farm has very fertile volcanic soils (due to past volcanic eruptions), and produces coffee of exceptional quality.

We taste notes of red applesplums, with a smooth medium body and balanced acidity, with a long sweet aftertaste.

As our #dYScover beans are roasted specially, and separately from the rest of our offerings, we only have limited quantities per month! If you have ever thought or wondered about specialty coffee from El Salvador, do make sure you give this a try soon!

There are so many different types of coffee grown in various regions of the world, with each region tasting very distinct from one another.

#dYScover, by Yong Seng Coffee, is our attempt at letting you experience high quality/specialty coffee from the various coffee-producing regions of the world. Read more about specialty coffee here!

Join us on this journey as we bring in coffee from different regions every month, as we explore the world of coffee together.

Testimonials

Tried the Arabica Blend and it changed my perspective of white coffee. Ditch your 3-in-1 and brew your own coffee with Yong Seng this CB period.

I ordered all the 6 choices (of Drip Bag Coffee) to try. Arrived yesterday and tried the Signature Blend #1 this morning. Clear indication of roasted & packing dates on each packet. Fresh and full of aroma, highly recommended. Tks!
